Cosmetic Dentist: Frequently Asked Questions
Cosmetic Dentist Serving San Jose, Sunnyvale and the Bay Area
What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a relatively new branch of dentistry that consists of many procedures to enhance the appearance of your smile. Many new techniques and materials are used to whiten teeth, straighten crowded or crooked teeth, close spaces, replace missing teeth, reduce or eliminate gummy smiles, replace gum tissue in areas of recession, make teeth larger or smaller, and even correct appearance problems related to congenital defects.
How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?
If you are shopping the cost of different cosmetic dentistry procedures, be aware that there are many factors to consider. The experience of the cosmetic dentist and technician are probably most important. While cost is obviously important, the quality of your cosmetic dentist and technician is crucial. (see fees)
What type of anesthesia is used in cosmetic dentistry?
Local anesthetic is always used during Dr Wayland’s cosmetic dentistry procedures and treatments. IV or oral sedation dentistry is used for anxious patients and long appointments.
Is there much discomfort after cosmetic dentistry?
The areas of injection may be sore for 2-3 days and your teeth may be sensitive to temperature, although it usually disappears after the final restorations are place. 600 mg of Ibuprofen taken before your appointment and every 8 hours for 2 days following appointment usually prevents or greatly reduces any post-operative discomfort.
Does Dr. Wayland use a laser during cosmetic dentistry procedures?
No. Lasers are used sparingly in cosmetic dentistry and have very specific applications. Whenever a laser can be used there is a traditional method that will work as well or better than the laser.
Where can I see before and after cosmetic dentistry photos?
Before and after photos are only illustrations of the results that are possible. Each case is individual and will not look exactly like any photo of a prior patient. Therefore, they are of limited value. (see before and after photos)
Aren’t all cosmetic dentists the same?
NO!!! Most “cosmetic dentists” do many general dentistry procedures including root canals, oral surgery, fillings, teeth cleanings, etc. There is no substitute for experience and, in most cases; a dentist who has limited their practice to cosmetic dentistry will have more experience. (see Board Certified Specialist)
What are AACD and LVI?
AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) and LVI (Las Vegas Institute) are organizations formed to teach general dentists about cosmetic dentistry.
Courses are weekend or modular week courses. Attending these courses indicates the dentist has interest in cosmetic dentistry. AACD offers a credential program. A fully credentialed AACD dentist has passed rigorous exams and shown that they are very competent cosmetic dentists and have a lot of experience. LVI is a similar organization, but does not have a credential program.
Membership in these organizations can be a step in the right direction; however, many distinguished cosmetic dentists are not even members of either AACD or LVI. An AACD or LVI logo on the front door or in a brochure may mean very little regarding the dentists’ competence.
Confusing? There is no substitute for experience. How many years has the dentist been doing cosmetic cases? How many cosmetic restorations have they done? Is their practice limited to cosmetic dentistry?
Is there a perfect age for cosmetic dentistry?
No. A cosmetic dentist solution is usually available at any age.
Are there any diet restrictions after cosmetic dentistry?
No. Any normal diet is acceptable, but it should be noted that even healthy, natural teeth might be damaged by unhealthy habits. For example, patients who constantly grind and clench their teeth put tremendous stress on natural tooth structure, muscles, the temporomandibular joint, and any restoration. This constant grinding can weaken natural teeth and restorations and cause them to chip or break. Patients with a history of grinding should wear a protective appliance when sleeping.
