Heredity

Most teeth are lost due to gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Periodontitis is the invasion of bacteria between the gum and tooth which causes bone loss around the teeth and leads to gum recession. In advanced stages of the disease the bone loss is so severe that teeth become loose. Finally, the teeth are lost and the only solution is implants, dentures, or a combination of the two.

The disease is classified in different severities from Type I to Type V depending on the extent of bone damage.

Type I is further divided into Type Ia and Ib. This is the very beginning of gum disease and is known as gingivitis. At this point the gums are red, bleed easily, and may be tender, but there is no bone loss.

The most severe classification is Type V, also known as refractory gum disease. This type of gum disease is not due to bacteria alone. There are systemic factors that make the prognosis hopeless, no matter how often the teeth are cleaned or how carefully the patient brushes or flosses. Fortunately, Type V is a very small percentage of periodontitis cases.

Owners manual suggestion #1

According to an American Dental Association survey, 75% to 80% of American adults have gum disease. If you are reading this, chances are good that you have gum disease. There is no cure for gum disease, but it can be controlled. The best way to control this disease is regular quality cleanings, good brushing and flossing, and good diet.

If you have Type II gum disease or greater, it may be best to see a specialist or periodontist every 3 months for your cleanings. This is probably the BEST way to assure control of the disease.
