Bacteria

Plaque literally means a colony of millions of bacteria and it forms in about 24 hours. Plaque is the culprit causing periodontitis, loss of teeth, and cavities. It can cause halitosis (bad breath).

Our mouths are filled with many different types of bacteria that are harmless in small amounts. However, when millions of bacteria form a colony on our teeth and gums, they can do damage.

The bacterial plaque colonies process sugar and produce toxins and acid as by-products that cause periodontitis and cavities. When the colonies are broken down by mechanical means they become harmless bacteria. Waterpiks, mouthwash, and toothpicks alone will not help. Only brushing and flossing teeth can guarantee results.

There are many misunderstandings about brushing and flossing. Cavities are common for children and gum disease is common for adults. This is because the amounts and types of bacteria change throughout life. As a result, brushing is usually more important for children and flossing for adults. Of course, both are best at any age.

Because plaque forms on average every 24 hours, complete removal once per day would do a lot to prevent dental disease. Unfortunately, in a modern world, most Americans brush their teeth once a day VERY quickly and never floss!

Owners manual suggestion #2

Brush and floss thoroughly once per day. Do not use toothpaste!

The fluoride in toothpaste is good, especially for children. After your home oral hygiene is complete it’s OK to brush quickly with fluoride toothpaste. But first brush without it.

Studies show that 90% of plaque will be removed after 5 minutes of brushing. Using toothpaste will give you a false sense of cleanliness that will last a few minutes. Brushing without toothpaste for 5 minutes will remove most of the plaque from your teeth. Make it a routine you do every day at the same time. You can also check for bleeding gums since your toothbrush and floss will be red.

Flossing is very important. Childhood cavities and adult gum disease form between teeth where the toothbrush can’t reach. Ask your dentist or hygienist how to brush and floss properly.

What are your teeth and smile worth to you? 10 minutes a day will keep your teeth white, cosmetic restorations healthy, and your smile beautiful.

Dr. Wayland can help you maintain your beautiful new smile after your dentistry treatment. Contact him today to schedule your initial dentistry consultation.
