Tooth Whitening: Frequently Asked Questions
Cosmetic Dentist Serving San Jose, Sunnyvale and the Bay Area
How can I whiten my teeth?
Teeth are whitened using hydrogen peroxide or a derivative called carbamide peroxide. Tooth whitening or tooth bleaching systems are divided into home and office tooth whitening.
In office peroxide is more concentrated and can significantly whiten teeth in about one hour. Home systems typically take about a week to ten days to achieve the same result. There are “over the counter” tooth whitening systems that can help, but whitening by a dentist is most effective.
Will tooth whitening damage my teeth?
There is no evidence that tooth whitening is harmful to your teeth. Transient sensitivity is common and usually lasts about one day. However, it is possible to cause irreversible damage if directions are not followed.
What is laser whitening?
Most in office tooth whitening systems use a very intense light to catalyze the active ingredient, hydrogen peroxide. A laser is one type of light used in tooth whitening. Two very popular systems are BriteSmile and Zoom!. Neither of these companies uses a laser but they do use a very intense light source. There is some evidence that the light source may not be any more effective than the concentrated hydrogen peroxide used alone.
How long does the whitening last?
Tooth whitening should last 3-4 years without touch up. Regular, at-home, monthly maintenance touch up will make the whitening effect last indefinitely. Diet is an important factor and foods such as coffee, tea, ketchup, and red wine will make the whitening fade faster. Smoking will also shorten the whitening lifespan.
